Urinary incontinence affects of 50% to 70% of long-term care residents and directly contributes to major movement-related impairments, including fall risks, (responsible for 70% of accidental deaths in adults), impaired balance, loss of functional mobility, and skin integrity issues. Physical therapists are primary movement system experts uniquely positioned to screen for Over Active Bladder (OAB) using standardized tools (such as the OAB-q) and deliver targeted neuromuscular interventions. Incorporating Percutaneous Tibial Neuromodulation into physical therapy plans of care allows clinicians to address the neurological drivers of urgency and frequency, reduce toileting-related fall hazards, and improve functional mobility and resident quality of life while supporting skilled nursing facilities key facility quality metrics.
