The Therapy Department at Granite Mesa recently launched an exciting new interdisciplinary initiative designed to combine creativity, collaboration, and functional movement. Our Therapy team challenged ourselves to create a series of engaging activities inspired by classic storybooks, with each event incorporating the expertise of Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Speech Therapy.

To bring this vision to life, we developed a six-month program in which a small team, consisting of, whenever possible, at least one PT or PTA, one OT or OTA, and one Speech Therapist, works together each month to design a unique resident experience.

This week marked the first activity in the series, inspired by the classic tale of Hansel and Gretel. Preparation for the event became an activity in itself, as residents eagerly helped create the scenery for the adventure. Together, they crafted trees for the “Great Woods,” blew up balloons, and decorated the witch's candy house, adding their own creativity and excitement to the project.

On the day of the event, residents journeyed through the Great Woods, following a trail of breadcrumbs from station to station. At each stop, participants selected a breadcrumb that revealed a fun challenge. Activities were designed to be adaptable, allowing residents to participate either standing or seated, ensuring everyone could join in the adventure. As they progressed through the woods, residents eagerly awaited their fate: Would they be captured by the witch, or would they successfully escape her clutches?

The event was filled with laughter, friendly competition, and plenty of opportunities for residents to challenge themselves in a fun and supportive environment. Most importantly, it provided a meaningful way to engage residents while promoting movement, ADLs, balance, problem-solving, and social interaction.

Our first storybook adventure was a tremendous success, and we are already looking forward to the following month's challenges, which include Rumpelstiltskin, Alice in Wonderland, and the Pied Piper. If the smiles, laughter, and enthusiasm from this week's event are any indication, our storybook therapy series is off to a fantastic start!
